Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
